Sam George criticizes Supreme Court for delaying ruling on Anti-Gay bill
Samuel Nartey George, the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram and lead advocate for the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the Supreme Court’s decision to postpone its ruling on anti-gay cases.
The Court deferred its initial July 17, 2024, ruling, citing the need to resolve all related legal challenges before making a decision.
As a key proponent of the bill, which seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, Sam George and his fellow sponsors have faced several legal suits.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face show, George voiced his frustration with the Court’s delay, which he believes is impeding Parliament’s constitutional duty.
He highlighted that the Supreme Court’s actions, in his view, have indirectly restrained Parliament without providing a clear timetable for resolving the cases.
George emphasized the national importance of the bill and called for an expedited ruling, criticizing the lack of urgency in addressing the issue.
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Act, passed in February 2024, faces legal opposition from figures such as Richard Dela Sky, Dr. Amanda Odoi, and University of Ghana law lecturer Prince Obiri-Korang, who have challenged the bill’s constitutionality.
