Joseph Whittal, Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), has sharply criticized President Akufo-Addo for failing to fulfill his promise to tackle illegal mining, or ‘galamsey.’

In an interview with the BBC, Whittal expressed his disappointment, highlighting the severe environmental damage and health risks associated with the practice.

He noted that the government’s inability to address the issue has had significant public health consequences, describing it as a broken promise from the President.

Whittal also supported calls for the declaration of a state of emergency to address the galamsey crisis, pointing out the urgent need for action given the ongoing environmental degradation.

He urged the government to take immediate steps to fulfill its obligations to the people before leaving office.
