The Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has confirmed that the government is constructing 1,000 housing units for individuals displaced by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

During a press conference in Accra on Monday, September 30, the minister reiterated the government’s dedication to easing the challenges faced by those affected.

He also announced the approval of phase two of the project, which includes an additional 1,010 housing units, with all necessary permits and the commencement certificate already secured.

The government is currently completing the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) and land acquisition procedures to initiate construction in this phase.

At present, 115 housing units are under construction, with progress exceeding 60%. The minister had broken ground for these units in April 2024.

The Akosombo Dam spillage, which occurred on October 15, 2023, severely impacted communities along the Lower Volta Basin, affecting approximately 88,000 people and destroying over 5,000 homes. Nearly a year later, many victims remain without permanent shelter.
