PURC announces 3.02% electricity and 1.86% water tariff hikes, effective October 1

The PURC has announced an increase in electricity and water tariffs for the third quarter of 2024, set to take effect on October 1.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced an increase in electricity and water tariffs for the third quarter of 2024, set to take effect on October 1.

According to a statement released on Saturday, September 28, electricity tariffs will rise by 3.02%, while water tariffs will see a 1.86% increase.

The PURC cited inflation, exchange rate fluctuations, and rising gas prices as key factors driving the upward adjustment. The commission noted that the economic difficulties facing Ghana, along with the prevailing living standards, were carefully considered in the decision-making process.

The new tariffs will apply to all categories of consumers. The commission emphasized that the decision was based on a review of parameters like inflation, the exchange rate, and the Weighted Average Cost of Gas (WACOG), in addition to assessing the impact on industries and the overall economy.

“Following the quarterly tariff review, the Commission wishes to inform the public that there will be a 3.02% increment in electricity tariffs and a 1.86% increment in water tariffs for the Third Quarter of 2024 for all categories of customers.

“The Commission’s decision is based on changes in some key parameters, such as inflation rate, exchange rate, and the Weighted Average Cost of Gas (WACOG) over the projected Third Quarter. The Commission also considered several other underlying factors, including the current economic conditions and general living standards of Ghanaians, and the competitiveness and sustainability of industries.”
