Sudan’s army launches major airstrikes to regain ground in capital

Khartoum

On Thursday, Sudan’s military initiated its most significant offensive to reclaim territory in the capital, Khartoum, since the onset of its 17-month war against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

This escalation comes just before an address by army commander General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Witnesses reported intense bombardments and clashes as army troops attempted to cross bridges connecting Khartoum with the neighboring cities of Omdurman and Bahri.

“The army is carrying out heavy artillery strikes and air strikes on Halfaya and Shambat,” said Ahmed Abdalla, a 48-year-old resident, who described the explosions as “very loud.”

Video footage captured plumes of black smoke rising over the capital, accompanied by the sounds of ongoing battles.

Army sources claimed their forces successfully crossed several bridges in Khartoum and Bahri, while the RSF countered that they had successfully thwarted attempts to cross two bridges into Khartoum.

However, Reuters could not independently verify these claims.

While the army regained some ground in Omdurman earlier this year, it has largely relied on artillery and airstrikes, struggling to displace the agile RSF forces that remain entrenched in various parts of the capital.
