The President of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors, Dr. Anthony Arko-Adjei, has called for enhanced cooperation between the government and the Institution to address the ongoing problem of illegal mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey.”

During the Institution’s Annual General Meeting in Ho, Dr. Arko-Adjei highlighted that the Ghana Institution of Surveyors possesses the necessary technological resources and expertise to help tackle the menace, which continues to endanger the environment and the livelihoods of affected communities.

He pointed out that the Institution has access to advanced geospatial technology and mapping systems that can be instrumental in identifying illegal mining sites and assessing their environmental impact.

These tools would allow for better monitoring of mining activities, providing accurate data to inform government policies aimed at curbing the practice.

Dr. Arko-Adjei emphasized the need for a collective approach, urging the government, private sector, and civil society to work together in the fight against illegal mining.

He reaffirmed the Institution’s readiness to collaborate and encouraged the government to engage with its experts to leverage available technological solutions.

He concluded by reiterating the Institution’s commitment to supporting the government and environmental agencies in efforts to address the issue, stressing the importance of joint action to successfully combat illegal mining.
