PNC flagbearer sues EC over disqualification from presidential race
Bernard Anbataayela Mornah, the flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), has filed a lawsuit against the Electoral Commission (EC) following his disqualification from the upcoming December 2024 presidential elections. Mornah was one of 11 presidential aspirants who were disqualified by the EC.
The Electoral Commission attributed the disqualification to errors on the aspirants’ nomination forms. EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, cited Mornah’s submission of incomplete supporter details and the use of registered voters from a specific district to endorse his nomination in other districts.
Additionally, discrepancies such as varying signatures for the same supporters and identical signatures for different individuals were found in his form.
Based on these issues, the EC’s committee recommended Mornah’s disqualification.
Mornah, however, contests the decision, arguing that his disqualification violates his rights, is illegal, and does not adhere to the due process requirements stipulated by law.
In his suit, Mornah seeks a court order compelling the Electoral Commission to declare him as duly nominated to contest in the 2024 presidential elections.
He is also requesting an injunction to prevent the EC from printing presidential ballot papers or proceeding with the elections on December 7, 2024, until he is allowed to participate as a candidate.
