Gyandu Park Should Have Been Redeveloped Instead Of Building A New Stadium – Hon Egyapa Mercer
Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Hon. Egyapa Mercer has strongly suggested that the Sekondi Gyandu Park should have been redeveloped instead of building a new stadium at Essipong.
The Sekondi sports stadium was constructed in the era of former president John Agyekum Kuffour and served as a venue for games during the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in 2008.
The Sports stadium has been out of use for nearly three years after a greater part of its facilities were left to deteriorate.
Currently, Sekondi-Takoradi does not have a sports facility that meets the standard of Division One League football.
The Gyandu Park did not meet the requirement of the club licensing board as renovation works continue.
In an exclusive interview with Spice Sports, Hon. Egyapa Mercer mentioned that the needed attention would have been given to Gyandu Park if it had been redeveloped seventeen years ago.
“I was part of the people who demonstrated for Gyandu Park to be redeveloped instead of building a new stadium and I still stand by it. It would have boosted local football.”
“The budget allocation is not enough but we believe the Sekondi sports stadium will be renovated in time.”
“Myself, together with the National Sports Authority and the clubs, are working on fixing the GyanduParkk for the upcoming Division One league season.”
Hon. Egyapa Mercer contributed both in cash and items to Sekondi Eleven Wise in gaining promotion back to Division One.
Additionally, the Member of Parliament has supported with an amount of ten thousand Ghana cedis to the ongoing renovation works at the Gyandu Park.
