Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications raises alarm over rising fibre cuts
The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has raised concerns about the alarming increase in fibre cuts across the country, which have severely damaged the nation’s telecom infrastructure and disrupted customer network experiences.
In the first half of 2024, the Chamber reported 5,133 fibre cuts, resulting in a repair cost of GH¢118 million—funds that could have been used to improve and expand services.
In response, the Chamber has launched the “Save Our Fibre” campaign, aiming to halt fibre cuts and is collaborating with various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Roads and Highways, road agencies, contractors, utility companies, and others to protect telecom infrastructure during construction and utility projects.
Despite these efforts, some entities continue to damage critical telecom infrastructure, negatively affecting service quality through outages, slow speeds, and disruptions, which hinder the country’s digital progress.
To combat this issue, the Chamber is urging its members to explore legal action against non-compliant individuals and entities, holding them accountable under the law.
It is also seeking support from the Police and Judiciary to prosecute those responsible for the recurring fibre cuts.
