Emergency evacuation at KIA following smoke detection in luggage

Ghana Airports Company Limited security personnel quickly responded after smoke was detected from a passenger’s luggage in the luggage wrap area of Terminal 3’s Departure Hall at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

According to a statement from GACL, the incident occurred on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at 3:27 PM.

The Aviation Security Department’s Operations Room acted swiftly, isolating the luggage and evacuating nearby passengers as part of their emergency protocols.

Management confirmed that the passenger had been turned over to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) for questioning.

They emphasized the importance of following International Civil Aviation Regulations, particularly the ban on travelling with batteries.

GACL reiterated that any prohibited items found in luggage will be confiscated, and the passenger may face legal consequences.

They expressed gratitude for passengers’ cooperation during the evacuation and reaffirmed their commitment to safety. Operations in the terminal have since resumed smoothly.
