New York police have arrested two 17-year-olds suspected of joyriding and crashing an empty subway train at the Briarwood station in Queens.

Both teens are charged with criminal mischief and reckless endangerment after they allegedly entered and operated the train, causing a “collision” before fleeing on foot.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported during the incident, which occurred shortly after midnight on September 12.

The method by which the teens gained access to the train remains unclear.

They managed to drive the vehicle approximately 50 feet (15 meters), as noted by Demetrius Crichlow, interim president of the New York City Transit Authority.

When asked about the pair’s knowledge of train operation, Mr. Crichlow stated, “It’s unclear at this point the experience of these two individuals, [or] where they got it.”

He labeled the joyride as “an extremely foolish and reckless act,” and mentioned that security cameras are being “aggressively” installed to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Surveillance images released by police show one suspect dressed in pink attire, including what appeared to be a shower cap.

A similar incident occurred in January at the Forest Hills-71st Avenue station, also in Queens, where no injuries or damage were reported.

At that time, officials speculated that a stolen key may have been used, reassuring the public that the train could not have left its yard to access active tracks.
