Guinea’s most wanted fugitive ex-col Claude Pivi extradited from Liberia
Guinea’s most wanted fugitive, former senior military officer Ex-Col Claude Pivi, has been extradited from neighboring Liberia after escaping from prison last November.
Along with him, his son Verny Pivi was also extradited.
Pivi is set to serve his life sentence after being convicted in absentia for his involvement in a 2009 massacre of opposition supporters at a stadium in Conakry.
The military prosecutor stated that both were apprehended during a routine security check on the border.
Photos circulating online show Pivi appearing frail and handcuffed next to his son, who is accused of orchestrating his father’s prison break.
The notorious ex-military leader Moussa Dadis Camara, who was also recently freed, was quickly recaptured.
He is currently serving a 20-year sentence for crimes against humanity related to the massacre, which resulted in over 156 deaths and numerous cases of sexual violence during a 2009 opposition rally.
Known as “Coplan,” Pivi previously held the position of minister of presidential security under Camara’s regime. Authorities had offered a reward of $58,000 for his capture.
Upon his return, Pivi was taken back to Conakry’s central prison to serve his life sentence.
Military prosecutor Colonel Aly Camara confirmed, “He was brought back to the central prison to serve his sentence in accordance with the law.”
Pivi’s lawyer, Abdourahmane Dabo, expressed concerns about his client’s health, describing him as “weak.”
Following the news of his arrest, Fatoumata Diariou Camara, a victim of the 2009 violence, expressed her relief, stating, “I pray that he will remain in prison forever.”
