Ghana Leads Africa in digital service exports
Ghana, along with Morocco and South Africa, accounted for over half of sub-Saharan Africa’s digitally delivered service exports, according to the latest World Trade Organization (WTO) report.
The analysis, covering trade data from 2022 to 2023, highlights Ghana as the continent’s top exporter of digitally delivered services, with exports valued at $6.2 billion in 2022, capturing 19% of the regional market.
The report forecasts substantial growth in Ghana’s digital service exports in 2024, following an impressive 30% increase the previous year. T
his surge is attributed to the government’s ongoing efforts to bolster the digital economy. While infrastructure development across Africa remains uneven, the report notes that nearly half of the continent now enjoys improved connectivity.
However, it stresses that further progress in the digital services sector will require policy and regulatory reforms. These reforms must aim to keep digital communications affordable, enhance citizens’ digital and entrepreneurial skills, and ensure businesses are prepared to seize emerging opportunities in the evolving digital economy.
