Akyem Asuom Youth warn of economic consequences from galamsey
The youth of Akyem Asuom have raised alarms over the severe economic impact of ongoing land degradation caused by illegal mining, locally known as ‘galamsey.’
They predict that if the current rate of environmental destruction continues, the prices of staple foods, such as cassava, could surge dramatically in the coming years.
One resident, Ekuoba, highlighted the urgency of the situation during an interview on The Point of View, stating that within two years, the price of a single tuber of cassava could reach GH₵50.
He attributed the predicted spike in food prices to the destruction of fertile agricultural lands caused by galamsey activities.
Ekuoba emphasized that the continuous devastation of arable land is reducing agricultural productivity, warning that this could result in significant food shortages and soaring prices for essential crops.
The youth stressed the need for immediate action to prevent future hardships driven by environmental damage.
