Former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has delivered a sharp critique of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s economic leadership, asserting that Ghanaians would rate him with an ‘F’ for his handling of the country’s economy.

Mahama’s comments came in response to recent statements made by Dr. Bawumia, who, while seeking election as the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), highlighted his achievements as Vice President as a foundation for his presidential ambitions.

During a community engagement in Amanfrom, as part of the second phase of his Greater Accra regional campaign tour, Mahama challenged Bawumia’s claims of success, arguing that the Vice President’s self-assessment doesn’t reflect the reality of the current economic challenges facing Ghanaians.

“Recently, I heard the flagbearer of the NPP, the Vice President, saying that he has performed excellently as Vice President and therefore deserves to be promoted to President,” Mahama stated. “And I said, I don’t know who marked his script and whether he marked it himself, but I can tell him that when it comes to his performance, the mark that the people of Ghana will give him for management of the economy is F — fail.”

Mahama further criticized the government for failing to address the worsening economic situation, emphasizing that the hardships faced by the country are a direct result of the administration’s poor financial stewardship.

“Recently, I heard the flagbearer of the NPP, the vice president, saying that he has performed excellently as vice president so they should promote him to president. And I said, I don’t know who marked his script and whether he marked it himself, but I can tell him that when it comes to his performance, the mark that the people of Ghana will give him for management of the economy is F, fail.

“The mark that the people of Ghana will give him for management of the economy is F. F means fail. Because when it comes to the economy, they failed completely, absolutely. And they cannot escape blame for where they have landed us,” he remarked.

John Mahama’s comments reflect growing dissatisfaction among sections of the public with the current state of the Ghanaian economy, as inflation, rising cost of living, and unemployment continue to burden citizens. He urged the government, particularly Dr. Bawumia, to take full responsibility for the economic crisis, rather than deflecting blame.
