Ensure Polls Are Credible – Prof. Opoku-Agyemang Urges EC

Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged the Electoral Commission to guarantee elections that are free, fair, and credible.

She emphasized that ensuring peace is more achievable when the electoral process is transparent and trustworthy.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang made these remarks during her speech at a durbar with the chiefs and people of Axim in the Western Region, which was part of this year’s Kundum festival celebrations.

She urged leaders to consistently foster peace and development.

“I trust that the chiefs and people of Axim will continue to uphold peace and respect each other’s opinions, especially as we approach the December elections to choose dedicated and deserving leaders,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said.

She expressed her hope that Ghanaians will elect leaders committed to serving the public in the upcoming elections.

“In this election, we must focus on electing individuals who embody the true essence of servant leadership. I am confident that the chiefs and people of Axim will choose to re-elect the current Member of Parliament, Hon. Kofi Arkoe Nokoe, in December 2024,” she added.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also highlighted several key projects undertaken by the NDC government in the Axim area, including the Axim Sea Defense Project, the asphalting of Axim town roads in 2015, the construction of a new Municipal Fire Service office, the Axim Divisional Police Command Office block, and the initiation of a mini harbor, which was later converted into a landing beach.

“Nananom, I assure you that the NDC is committed to reverting this project to its original plan,” she promised.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also highlighted the establishment of the Axim Girls Senior High School, which gained prominence thanks to the efforts of Awulae Attibrukusu III.

Addressing the issue of illegal mining, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that it is severely impacting the livelihoods of many, including those in Axim and nearby areas. She assured that a future NDC government will not associate with or appoint individuals suspected of involvement in illegal mining activities.

“We will not align ourselves with or appoint anyone connected to galamsey, unlike the current government,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized.

She praised the chiefs for their unity and vision in fostering development among their communities and urged them to continue promoting unity, tolerance, and peace, especially as the 2024 elections approach.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang called on the youth to refrain from being used as agents of violence before and during the general elections.

She assured the people of Evalue Ajomoro Gwira, and Ghanaians at large, of the NDC’s commitment to ensuring peaceful elections and urged the chiefs to advocate for the Electoral Commission to uphold fairness.
