Confirmed Mpox case reported in Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality; health facilities placed on high alert

The Western Regional Health Directorate has confirmed a case of Mpox in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality, following a report received on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
In response, all health facilities across the region have been urged to enhance their preparedness and response measures immediately.
According to the Directorate, health institutions, especially Basic Management Centres (BMCs), are to be on high alert for signs and symptoms associated with Mpox, a viral disease known to spread through close contact with infected individuals or animals.
As part of intensified response efforts, the Directorate has issued a comprehensive directive to all BMCs, including:
To be on high alert for the signs and symptoms of Mpox
Strengthen the surveillance system by sensitizing the health workforce on the Mpox
Re-orient the health workforce on IPC and case management in the context of Mpox
All health facilities should identify and prepare an isolation room/ward for admission of Mpox cases
Ensure case definition, case investigation forms and sample containers are available in all facilities.
Intensify risk communication on Mpox with emphasis on early reporting and prevention
Update emergency preparedness and response plans.
Acting Regional Director of Health Service at GHS, Dr. Gifty Amugi in a press release, counted on the cooperation of residents and health practitioners to contain the disease.
