NCCE Urges Immediate Action Against Illegal Mining Amid Environmental Crisis
The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has voiced urgent concern over the escalating environmental damage caused by illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
The Commission strongly condemns galamsey as a severe environmental threat, to public health, and national prosperity. It calls on the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces to take swift and robust measures against those involved.
The NCCE demands intensified patrols and surveillance in areas vulnerable to illegal mining, along with the arrest and prosecution of offenders. It also urges collaboration with local communities to report and combat illicit mining activities.
Political parties are urged to show a clear commitment to addressing galamsey, providing concrete plans to tackle the issue decisively.
The NCCE applauds the efforts of the Chiefs and youth of Akyem Asoum in the Eastern Region for expelling galamsey operators from their community and encourages other communities to follow suit.
The Commission remains dedicated to partnering with state agencies, civil society, and local communities to foster good environmental practices and promote sustainability.
Protecting the environment is a collective responsibility, and the NCCE stresses the need for immediate, decisive action to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources and secure a sustainable future for all.
