“This is unpardonable” – MP urges President Akufo-Addo to step down amid galamsey crisis

Ranking member of Parliament’s Assurance Committee, John Oti Bless, has called for the resignation of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, citing the government’s failure to effectively combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

In 2017, President Akufo-Addo vowed to end the menace, even pledging to put his presidency on the line to stop the environmental degradation caused by illegal mining. However, water bodies across the country continue to be polluted by galamsey activities, prompting renewed concerns from stakeholders.

Speaking to Accra-based Citi News, Mr. Oti Bless, who is also the MP for Nkwanta North, expressed disappointment in the president’s inaction, calling it “unpardonable” given the severity of the situation. He referenced a World Bank report warning that Ghana may have to import potable water in the near future if the problem persists.

He urged the media to hold the president accountable for his unfulfilled promise, saying, “Akufo-Addo being a human rights lawyer, and allowing this to happen under his leadership, is unacceptable.”

“If you recall the president promised that he was going to put his presidency on the line if galamsey was not curtailed so it is up to you the media to invite him again, call on him again, ask him. Like you said, you were putting your presidency on the line.

“So now that the issue is getting out of hand, it is escalating. I believe you read the World Bank report that says that within a few years, Ghana has to import water.

“Akufo-Addo being a human rights lawyer and his thing happening under your nose is unpardonable.”
