The Institute for Energy Security, IES, has strongly opposed the Gas Bill seeking to structure Ghana’s energy sector, calling on the government to rather focus on strengthening the key institutions.
The bill proposes merging the Volta River Authority, VRA with the Building Power Authority, combining the Electricity Company of Ghana with the Northern Electricity Distribution Company, NEDCO and establishing an Independent Thermal Power Authority.
In a statement, IES expressed concerns about the potential negative consequences of these changes.
The IES argued that the risk outweighs the benefit to be derived from the proposed merger.
The statement emphasized the importance of stabilising and reinforcing existing institutions to ensure Ghana’s power security, affordability and long-term sustainability.
Some groups of VRA have already voiced opposition to the proposed mergers, asserting that they are not in the best interest of the nation and could have dire consequences for both VRA and the broader Ghanaian public.
