Chamber of Agribusiness plans protest over illegal mining

The Chamber of Agribusiness is set to organize a demonstration in response to the widespread destruction of farmlands by illegal mining activities.

The Chamber reports that over 1.2 million hectares of farmland have been damaged, raising concerns among investors about the future of agribusiness in the country.

CEO Anthony Morrison expressed frustration, noting that despite multiple complaints, illegal miners continue to exploit the land for resources like gold.

He highlighted the severe impact on investments, indicating that the Chamber is planning to issue a press release followed by a demonstration involving farmers and agribusiness stakeholders.

Morrison called for urgent action from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, stating that the Chamber has lost trust in the government’s ability to protect the livelihoods of the 57% of the rural population involved in agriculture, which amounts to 17 million people.

The Chamber also plans to petition international bodies such as the Food and Agriculture Organization to apply pressure on the president to address the issue.

Morrison warned of potential export restrictions on Ghanaian agricultural products if the situation remains unaddressed, as European countries and other importers may implement safeguards against products from affected areas.

He emphasized the need for immediate intervention to restore investor confidence in the agricultural sector, urging a swift end to illegal mining in zones designated for agricultural investment.
