Agona East communities struggle without electricity for decades
Residents of Kofi Abam, Okotokwa, Kwame Ntiful, and five other communities in the Agona East District have faced decades without electricity, significantly affecting their livelihoods and daily activities.
The lack of power is especially challenging for school children, who are unable to study at night due to inadequate lighting.
The absence of electricity is stalling economic development and creating unsafe living conditions for thousands, as residents rely on candles and lanterns for light.
Businesses in these areas have also been negatively impacted, as the lack of power hampers productivity and worsens economic hardships.
Frustrated residents have voiced concerns about increased vulnerability to crime and the stark contrast between their communities and neighboring areas with electricity.
Despite some communities being wired, they remain unconnected to the national grid.
Assembly members expressed concerns over unfulfilled government promises, and the Member of Parliament for Agona East, Queenstar Mame Pokuah Sawyerr, accused the current government of obstructing her efforts to bring electricity to these communities.
While she has successfully connected 48 communities, her appeals to the Ministry of Energy have been unsuccessful.
