Men Over 50 Urged to Screen For Prostate Cancer Cases Early

Male adults above age 50 are advised to get screened for prostate cancer frequently.

Prostate cancer is a complex disease that affects millions of men globally, predominantly in high human development index regions.

Most tumors can be benign, forming slowly with many men never knowing they have the disease.

However, some prostate cancers are aggressive and will spread beyond the prostate cancers to the parts of the body such as bones lymph nodes and lungs.

Dr. Abdul Bassit, Medical Doctor of the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital says early detection saves lives.

“It’s very important that at least once in a while, you go do some check-up and know if everything is okay. In the initial stages, you won’t show any symptoms, when you start to show symptoms, then it means the problem is escalating, and the disease is progressing. As usual, they come to the hospital, and the disease has become worse, whatever we do, we are buying time for you,”

But if you check we detect early, there are lots of things we can do to help you,” Dr. Basit said.

According to Dr. Bassit, there are no concrete causes of prostate cancer, but there are symptoms associated with the cancer.

He mentioned weak urine flow, frequent urination or difficulty emptying the bladder as some of the symptoms of prostate cancer.

“In the early stages, there are no symptoms, you just be going about your normal life, but we are able to pick it with a specific test, called the Prostate Specific Anti-gene. So it is advised that people over 50 years, go and check their prostate, so that if it is high we start investigating it further and catch it early,”

” Some of the symptoms, you might have may be, blood in your urine, urinating very frequently, and painful urination amongst others. You start having these symptoms,”
