A final-year student at O’Reilly Senior High School has been remanded by the La District Court for two weeks after fatally stabbing a classmate.

The accused, whose identity remains undisclosed, faces a provisional charge of murder.

His plea was not accepted, and the case was adjourned to September 19, 2024, to allow police further time to investigate.

The incident occurred after a disagreement between the students over whose parents were wealthier, resulting in the tragic death of Edward Borketey Sackey.

In response to the incident, the Ghana Education Service (GES) urged the public to avoid speculation and allow the investigative process to take its course.

In a statement released on September 4, 2024, GES expressed deep regret over the event, offering condolences to Edward Sackey’s family, friends, and the school community.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the bereaved family, friends, and the entire school community,” the statement read.

GES noted that the Director General had personally led a delegation to visit both the school and the bereaved family, pledging full support during this difficult time.

“We will continue to support the school and assure the public that we are working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure a thorough investigation,” GES stated, adding that they aim to conclude their administrative investigations within two weeks while the police manage the criminal aspects.

The statement also confirmed that calm had been restored at the school, with GES ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff.

“We remain committed to providing a secure and conducive learning environment for all students and will continue to work tirelessly to prevent such incidents,” GES said, emphasizing their dedication to maintaining schools as safe spaces for academic growth.
