VRA Staff Oppose Merger with Bui Power Authority
Staff of the Volta River Authority (VRA) have voiced strong opposition to a proposed draft bill seeking to merge the VRA with the Bui Power Authority.
Theophilus Tetteh Ahia, Chairman of the Senior Staff Association at VRA, expressed concerns that the merger is part of a broader scheme to create a new entity that could eventually be sold.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Ahia argued that the bill’s goal is to separate VRA’s thermal power plant, a move he believes would be detrimental to the country.
He emphasized that both VRA and Bui Power Authority have been operating efficiently and do not require a merger to improve their performance.
Ahia stated that VRA, with over 53 years of experience, has been a leader in hydro power plant operations in the region.
Similarly, Bui Power has also demonstrated high efficiency since its establishment. He questioned the necessity of the merger, suggesting it was a “facade” aimed at separating VRA’s Thermal Power Plant into an independent entity for eventual sale.
The proposed bill also outlines plans to merge the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) with the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) and create an independent Thermal Power Authority, according to a September 4 statement from the VRA.
