NDC Will Enhance Free SHS Policy if Elected – Prof. Opoku-Agyemang

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reassured Ghanaians that the party is committed to enhancing the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy introduced by the NPP government, should they win the 2025 election.

Her remarks come in response to longstanding accusations from the NPP that the NDC opposes the policy and might cancel it if elected.

Speaking at a rally in Sekondi during her three-day campaign tour of the Western Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that the NDC has no plans to abolish Free SHS. Instead, the party aims to address the current challenges faced by students, teachers, and schools.

Drawing on her experience as a former Minister of Education, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the NDC’s previous achievements in the education sector, such as the establishment of Community Day Schools and the introduction of Progressively Free SHS.

She urged Ghanaians to ignore the anti-NDC propaganda suggesting the program’s potential cancellation.

According to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, the next NDC government will focus on improving Free SHS by investing in classroom and boarding infrastructure to eliminate the double-track system, providing necessary teaching and learning materials, and ensuring an adequate food supply for students.

She questioned whether the current government is implying that the challenges in the education system, such as the double-track system, should be overlooked, or that students should be deprived of improved food and modern teaching materials.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stressed that the NDC has a detailed plan to enhance the Free SHS policy and elevate the quality of secondary education.

She also urged voters to support John Dramani Mahama to ensure his commitment to advancing education at all levels and creating job opportunities for the youth through the 24-Hour Economy policy.
