Father to sue O’Reilly SHS after son’s fatal stabbing on campus
Enoch Sackey, the father of Edward Sackey, an 18-year-old final-year student at O’Reilly SHS who was fatally stabbed during an altercation on campus, has announced his intention to sue the school.
Edward, a General Arts student, died on Monday, September 2, after being stabbed by a classmate from the Visual Arts Department.
In an interview with Accra-based CitiNews, Enoch Sackey expressed his family’s deep frustration and insisted that the school must be held accountable for the events leading to his son’s tragic death. He criticized the school’s teachers for their apparent negligence during the incident.
“We have to sue the school [O’Reilly SHS], we have to hold the school responsible. We want the school authority to come out to explain and tell us why such a thing would happen on school premises with no intervention from the teachers… they were all unconcerned until my son passed away,” Mr. Sackey stated.
Mr. Sackey mentioned that his niece had contacted him earlier that day, urging him to come to the school due to the ongoing fight. He initially questioned the need for his presence, believing that the teachers were responsible for managing such situations. However, he later went to the school in Accra to understand what had happened.
On Tuesday, Enoch Sackey and other family members, dressed in red and black, picketed the school premises to express their anger. Mr. Sackey added that neither the school administration, the attacker’s family, nor the police had reached out to them about the incident.
“We want answers from the school authority, the parents of the boy, and the police. What happened to lead to a student stabbing his friend? That’s all we want. We want justice, and we want the school authority to explain if the teachers were present when it happened or if they simply didn’t care,” he demanded.
Reports indicate that Edward was stabbed three times in the chest during an argument about wealth.
Despite Edward reportedly seeking help from some teachers, they allegedly did nothing. Tragically, Edward was found covered in blood after the attack and was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The suspect has since been arrested by the Ghana Police Service.
