Komenda residents to demonstrate in Accra against lease of factory to Indian firm
The Concerned Citizens of the Komenda Traditional Area have informed the Ghana Police Service of their plans to stage a demonstration on September 17, 2024, in Accra, protesting the lease of the Komenda Sugar Factory to an Indian company.
Originally planned for August 13 in Komenda, the protest will now be held in the capital.
The demonstrators are demanding the reversal of the lease agreement, insisting that the factory should return to its original purpose of processing locally grown sugarcane rather than importing raw sugar. They claim the lease was made without proper procedural adherence and lacked stakeholder consultation.
In a statement dated September 3, 2024, the group notified the police, in accordance with Section 1 clause 1 of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491). The protest is expected to attract at least 5,000 concerned Ghanaians from Accra and nearby regions.
The demonstration will begin at 6:00 am from the 37 Lorry Station in Accra and proceed to the Jubilee House. The group has requested police support and security to ensure the protest remains peaceful.
