Central Region: Twins drown in abandoned Galamsey pit at Twifo Atti-Morkwa
In a devastating incident on Thursday, two-and-a-half-year-old twins—a boy and a girl—tragically drowned after falling into an abandoned galamsey pit filled with water in Morkwaa, a farming community near Twifo Praso in the Central Region’s Twifo Atti-Morkwa District.
The twins’ mother, who was reportedly unwell, had fallen asleep while her children were playing outside. When she awoke, she realized her children were missing and searched the house in vain.
To her horror, she discovered their lifeless bodies in a neglected galamsey pit close to their home.
This tragic event is the eighth fatality caused by uncovered galamsey pits in the district this year, according to local residents. George Sam, the Assembly member for the Morkwa Electoral Area, confirmed the tragedy to the Ghana News Agency, while the police have initiated investigations into the incident.
The children’s bodies have been taken to the Twifo-Praso Government Hospital Morgue for preservation.
Concerned residents have expressed deep concern over the numerous uncovered galamsey pits in the community and are urging the Assembly to ensure the land is reclaimed to prevent further tragedies.
