New Labour Act 2023 Sets the Stage for Modern Work Standards

The government has announced the development of a new labour bill 2024, aimed at modernizing Ghana’s labour laws to better align with the rapidly changing world of work.

The bill seeks to address existing gaps in the Labour Act 2023, Act 651 by introducing key provisions including the introduction of maternity leave and protections against violence and harassment at the workplace.

According to the Minister of Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, the bill is currently awaiting Cabinet approval and if passed by Parliament, will mark a significant step towards promoting decent work standards in Ghana.

” The world of work is changing rapidly, and we must be adequately prepared for it. As a result, the Ministry has reviewed a number of sector enactments to make them comprehensive and suitable for contemporary use.

In 2023, the Labour Act 2023 Act 651 was promulgated to regulate the world of work and to promote decent work standards.

There is no doubt that the current labour act has served the nation well. In the same vein, the world of work has undergone dramatic changes to the extent that if care is not taken, the current labour,” Mr. Baffour said.
