Ghana soybeans farmers urge government to lift grain export ban

Ghana Soybeans Farmers and Aggregators Association has called on the government to urgently revoke the recently imposed ban on grain exports.

The Ghana Soybeans Farmers and Aggregators Association has called on the government to urgently revoke the recently imposed ban on grain exports, arguing that the measure is detrimental to farmers whose livelihoods rely on exporting grains.

The government announced the ban on Tuesday, August 27, as a response to the ongoing drought in the northern part of the country.

However, Abdul Hakeem Issah, Director of Administration for the Ghana Soybeans Farmers Aggregators Association, criticized the decision, stating that it is not an effective solution.

Mr. Issah emphasized that the issue could still be addressed without resorting to an export ban, and pointed out that the government has failed to properly utilize Buffer Stock, which was established to store grains during peak seasons and release them during lean periods.

“The recent ban on grains cannot solve the problem. And what we are saying is that the situation can still be resolved. It is not bad yet.

“What we are saying is that Buffer Stock was created to accumulate grains, grains in the peak season, and store them at their warehouses and release those grains during the lean season which the government has failed to do over the years. So we are saying that as the situation exists currently, we shouldn’t put in the ban.”
