Sosu urges Akufo-Addo to sign the anti-witchcraft bill before the end of his term

Francis-Xavier Sosu, Member of Parliament for Madina, is urging President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to sign the Anti-Witchcraft Bill into law before the end of his term.

The 2023 bill, which has already been passed by Parliament, aims to outlaw witch-finding practices and prohibit the labeling of individuals as witches.

Despite the bill’s passage, elderly individuals continue to suffer from mob attacks, such as a recent incident in Nyambong, Oti Region, where an elderly man was brutally assaulted over accusations of wizardry. President Akufo-Addo has expressed concerns about the financial implications of the bill if enacted.

Speaking to Citi News, Francis-Xavier Sosu condemned the ongoing attacks, attributing the persistence of such incidents to the president’s inaction.

He emphasized that without the president’s endorsement, the advocacy efforts to protect the vulnerable are incomplete.

Sosu dismissed the president’s concerns as unfounded, pointing out that the bill had undergone thorough processes before reaching its current stage.

He called on President Akufo-Addo to demonstrate his commitment to human rights and the protection of the elderly by signing the bill into law before leaving office.
