Ghana Hydrological Authority seeks $5bn to combat nationwide flooding
The Ghana Hydrological Authority has announced that an estimated $5 billion is needed to effectively tackle the country’s widespread flood challenges.
This figure was presented by Dr. John Kissi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Hydrological Authority, during a session with Parliament’s Assurance Committee on Wednesday.
Dr. Kissi highlighted the significant gap between the current funding and what is actually required, noting that in 2023, the Authority was allocated GH¢92 million under the National Flood Control Programme. He described this amount as insufficient to address the extensive flood issues affecting cities and towns across all regions of Ghana. The proposed $5 billion would support comprehensive flood prevention and management efforts nationwide.
“In 2023 under the National Flood Control Programme, we received about GH¢92 million to undertake flood mitigation works across the country.”
“The work that we’ve done looking at the flood waste challenges across the country we estimate that we need about $5 billion across the country to address comprehensively the flood waste challenges that we have.
“That is looking across every city and every town in every region of the country,” he stated.
