Peasant Farmers Association criticize govt’s grain export ban amid drought

Peasant Farmers Association has expressed dissatisfaction with the government's recent decision to impose a ban on the export of key grains.

The Peasant Farmers Association has expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s recent decision to impose a ban on the export of key grains, including maize, rice, and soybeans.

The ban, announced by Minister for Food and Agriculture Bryan Acheampong, is intended to secure food supplies within the country amid a severe dry spell affecting eight regions.

However, Bismark Owusu Nortey, President of the Peasant Farmers Association, voiced concerns during an interview on Accra-based Joy FM, stating that the government failed to consult with farmers before implementing the ban. He emphasized that farmers, as key stakeholders, should have been included in discussions to find a more comprehensive solution.

“The first one has to do with government’s resolve to ban the export of grains. I think that this particular approach – is an approach that was not inclusive. They did not take on board the views the concerns and the possible challenges that this might have on farmers,” he said.

Nortey argued that the ban could lead to lower prices for farmers, as they might be forced to sell their produce at reduced rates to avoid spoilage. He stressed the importance of implementing local measures to protect farmers from potential financial losses resulting from the export ban.

“If you are announcing a ban, the ideal thing is to put in place local measures that will insulate the farmers from any possible low prices,” he added.
