Bawumia advocates digitalisation as a key tool in Ghana’s anti-corruption fight
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has emphasized that digitalisation is essential in the fight against corruption in Ghana, particularly highlighting the significant impact of the Ghana card on the public sector payroll.
Dr. Bawumia noted that the introduction of the Ghana card has provided a unique identity for 18 million adult Ghanaians, which has facilitated the detection and removal of ghost workers and pensioners, leading to substantial savings for the country.
During a media engagement on Sunday, August 25, 2024, Dr. Bawumia expressed his confidence in digitalisation as an effective tool to combat corruption, citing the progress made in addressing longstanding issues.
He pointed out that the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) identified and eliminated 29,000 ghost pensioners, resulting in savings of GH¢400 million. Similarly, the National Service Secretariat detected 44,000 ghost service personnel, saving over GH¢350 million.
The NPP flagbearer also highlighted that digitalisation has enabled the complete elimination of ghost workers from the Controller and Accountant General’s payroll, marking a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to combat corruption.
