NRSA raises alarm over rising number of widows due to road accidents
The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has voiced concerns about the increasing number of widows created by road crashes predominantly involving men.
Recent NRSA statistics reveal that men accounted for 79% of road fatalities between January and July 2024, while women represented 21%.
During the launch of the Road Safety Code of Practice for political activities in Accra, Daniel Wuaku, Director for Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation at the NRSA, highlighted the disproportionate impact of road fatalities on women, who are often left to bear the emotional and financial burden of losing their spouses.
“Women constitute just 21% of deaths recorded between January to July 2024, while men make up 79%. This is leading to more widows. I think it is time for women to take an advocacy position in this country and fight for lives because they are the ones at the receiving end. And therefore we need you on board to support our activities”, Mr. Wuaku urged.
