Rev Dr Opuni-Frimpong appeals to Asiedu Nketia to sign peace pact
Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, Executive Director of Alliance for Christian Advocacy Africa, has called on Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to commit to peace by signing the peace pact before the December elections.
This appeal comes after Mr. Nketia outlined specific conditions that the NDC insists must be met before considering the Peace Pact, which has been advocated by the National Peace Council in anticipation of the December 7 elections.
Mr. Nketia has expressed doubts about the effectiveness of previous Peace Pacts, pointing to the 2020 elections, during which eight NDC members were reportedly killed by national security operatives without any accountability.
In a meeting with the National Peace Council on August 20 at the NDC headquarters, Mr. Nketia detailed the conditions for the party’s participation, including the full implementation of recommendations from the investigation into the violence during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
Rev Dr Opuni-Frimpong, in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Wednesday, urged Mr. Nketia to prioritize peace, emphasizing the importance of committing to democratic processes and the acceptance of election results through legal and acceptable means.
He stressed the essence of the peace pact, stating that all parties must avoid mobilizing people to the streets and instead commit to peaceful and democratic practices.
