Police Officer Remanded for Allegedly Shooting and Killing 25-Year-Old at Koans Estate
The District Court in Adabraka has remanded Constable Smith Gyekyi into custody following allegations that he shot and killed 25-year-old Stanley Ahadzi at Koans Estate in Kuntunse.
Constable Gyekyi has been charged with murder and is scheduled to reappear in court on September 9, 2024.
Chief Inspector Achana informed the court that on Sunday, August 18, around 4 a.m., the police control room received a report of a man shot dead in front of Koans Estate in Satellite. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim lying face-up with blood covering his body.
Investigations revealed that Constable Gyekyi was driving a private saloon car, which he was using as a commercial vehicle.
The prosecution stated that around 3 a.m. that day, the accused picked up a witness, Esther Owusua, from Ablekuma Joma and was transporting her to the Koans Estate area. Owusua, having lost her way, called the deceased to meet her at the estate’s gate.
Upon arrival, a dispute over the fare allegedly led Constable Gyekyi to become enraged. He reportedly fired a warning shot before shooting the victim. The prosecution also noted that Constable Gyekyi later turned himself in at the Amasaman Divisional Police Station, where he was arrested and detained.
