Bernard Owusu elected new chairman of Trades Union Congress (TUC)

Bernard Owusu has been elected as the new Chairman of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Ghana, succeeding Alex Opoku-Nyarko.

Bernard Owusu has been elected as the new Chairman of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Ghana, succeeding Alex Opoku-Nyarko.

Prior to his election, Owusu served as the National Chairman of the General Transport Petroleum Chemical Workers Union (GTPCWU). In the closely contested election, Owusu secured 347 votes, defeating Opoku-Nyarko, who garnered 163 votes in his bid for re-election.

In addition to Owusu’s victory, Joshua Ansah, who previously served as Deputy Secretary General, was elected as the new Secretary General, replacing Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah. Ansah received broad support from the delegates.

The election results, with 511 delegates participating, revealed one rejected vote for the Chairman position. Other key positions filled include the Vice Chairperson role, which went to Ken Koduah, and the Vice Chairperson (Women) position, secured by Salamatu Mahama Braimah.

The newly elected national officers of the TUC are:

  • Chairman: Bernard Owusu
  • Vice Chairperson: Ken Koduah
  • Vice Chairperson (Women): Salamatu Mahama Braimah
  • Secretary-General: Joshua Ansah
  • Deputy Secretary General: Kwabena Nyarko Otoo
