Kenya: Suspected serial killer escapes police custody alongside 12 inmates
A major security breach occurred in Kenya’s capital when Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, a suspect in the murder of 42 women, escaped from police custody.
Khalusha, who was being held for further investigation following the discovery of dismembered bodies in Nairobi, fled alongside 12 other Eritrean inmates detained for illegal entry.
Mohamed Amin, head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, confirmed the escape, and Acting Police Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli announced disciplinary actions against eight officers, including station commanders.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the escape was facilitated by insiders, as the inmates managed to cut through wire mesh and scale the perimeter wall.
Khalusha, 33, was in custody pending charges after being linked to the gruesome discovery of 10 bodies and body parts in Nairobi’s Kware area.
He reportedly confessed to killing 42 women, including his wife. However, Khalusha’s lawyer, John Maina Ndegwa, claims his client was tortured into confessing and maintains his innocence.
The escape was discovered during a routine breakfast delivery. The police station has been cordoned off, and senior officers are investigating the incident.
Two additional suspects, found with cellphones belonging to some of the victims, are scheduled to appear in court next Monday.
The bodies were initially discovered in July after a local diver, prompted by a dream from a missing woman’s relatives, found them in a quarry.
While six bodies were identified through DNA testing, several body parts remain unaccounted for.
