GBC only received $105,000? Sports Ministry details African Games payment controversy
The Youth and Sports Ministry has provided clarity regarding the payment made to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) for its role as the official broadcaster of the 13th African Games held in Accra earlier this year.
This comes after Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif’s statement during a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) session on August 19, 2024, sparked controversy.
Minister Ussif claimed that GBC had been paid over $3 million for its production and broadcasting services for the Games, a statement that was contested by GBC’s Director-General, Prof. Amin Alhassan, who asserted that the broadcaster only received $105,000.
In response to the conflicting reports, the Ministry issued a detailed breakdown of the financial arrangements, revealing that the total agreed amount for GBC’s services was $3.6 million. Of this, $2.5 million was paid directly to GBC in two instalments, with the remaining $1 million going to third-party service providers as directed by GBC.
The Ministry emphasized that all financial transactions were conducted with transparency and integrity, aiming to build local capacity and leave a lasting legacy post-Games.
