GBC boss refutes $3m payout, states African Games coverage earned them only $105,000
The Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Professor Amin Alhassan, has disputed claims by the Ministry of Youth and Sports that the state broadcaster received over $3 million for its coverage of the 13th African Games.
During a Public Accounts Committee session on Monday, August 19, Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif stated that GBC was paid more than $3 million, responding to concerns from committee member Sam George regarding unpaid debts to technical staff involved in the event.
However, in a statement on GBC, Prof. Alhassan refuted the claim, clarifying that the broadcaster received only $105,000. He explained that this amount was intended as support for GBC’s decision to dedicate its GTV Sports Plus channel exclusively to the African Games, suspending regular programming.
“Yesterday, I was among those shocked to hear that the Minister of Youth and Sports claimed GBC received in excess of $3 million. I want to assure the public that GBC’s total benefit from the African Games was $105,000, and nothing more was paid to us,” Prof. Alhassan stated. He emphasized that the payment was solely for GBC’s role as the official broadcaster of the games, providing 24-hour coverage.
