The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has officially ended its two-month strike, which began on June 14 in protest of the government’s failure to implement agreed-upon arbitral awards and improve conditions of service.

The decision to call off the strike was announced in a statement released on Tuesday, August 20.

CETAG, however, issued a stern warning that the strike would resume at the end of October 2024 if the government fails to adhere to the newly agreed-upon roadmap.

The decision to end the strike followed an emergency virtual National Council meeting held on August 20, 2024, where members unanimously agreed to return to work.

This decision was influenced by a meeting between CETAG and the Office of the Vice President on August 15, 2024, during which assurances were made to resolve the ongoing issues.

The association outlined specific milestones that the government must meet to avoid another strike.

These include the payment of frozen salaries for July and August 2024 by the end of August 2024, completion of the offline migration of staff by the same deadline, and verification of offline migration data by all 46 colleges of education before processing by the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) in September 2024.

Additionally, CETAG stipulated that payment after migration should be reflected in October 2024 salaries, with an agreement on the payment plan for all arrears to be reached immediately.

The nomenclature for migrating senior teaching staff must align with affiliate universities’ Scheme of Service, and compensation for all-year-round work done in 2022 should be paid by the end of August 2024. Furthermore, all holders of researched Master’s degrees must be migrated as Assistant Lecturers.

CETAG emphasized that if these conditions are not met, the strike action will resume at the end of October 2024.
