India sets up national task force on medical workplace safety after doctor’s murder

On Tuesday, India’s Supreme Court ordered the establishment of a national task force of doctors to address workplace safety, following the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor.

This tragedy, which occurred on August 9 at a state-run hospital in Kolkata, has ignited widespread protests from doctors across the country, who have demanded safer working conditions and a prompt investigation.

The court also instructed the federal police to present a report on the investigation’s progress by Thursday.

In response to the incident, doctors have staged protests and refused to attend to non-emergency patients.

A police volunteer has been arrested and charged in connection with the crime.

Women activists argue that this case underscores the ongoing issue of sexual violence against women in India, despite the implementation of stricter laws following the 2012 gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old student in New Delhi.
