Supreme Court Nominee Urges Stability of 1992 Constitution, Warns Against Frequent Amendments

Supreme Court Nominee Prof. Richard Frimpong Oppong Advocates for Judicial Interpretation Over Frequent Amendments to 1992 Constitution

During his vetting by Parliament’s Appointment Committee on August 13, 2024, Prof. Richard Frimpong Oppong, Supreme Court nominee, argued that the 1992 Constitution should evolve through judicial interpretation rather than frequent amendments.

He praised the Constitution for its role in strengthening democracy, upholding human rights, and maintaining stability in Ghana.

Oppong emphasized that the Constitution has served the nation effectively and warned against treating it as a document to be altered regularly.

Meanwhile, the Minority has raised concerns about the President’s authority to appoint Supreme Court justices, questioning whether such appointments align with Articles 128(1) and (2) of the Constitution.
