Prosecutors investigate former Argentinian President over domestic assault allegations

Fernández

Prosecutors in Argentina have initiated an investigation into former President Alberto Fernández following accusations of severe injuries inflicted on his ex-partner.

Last week, former first lady Fabiola Yáñez, 43, lodged a complaint alleging that the 65-year-old former president physically assaulted her during their relationship, which ended after his term concluded in 2023.

In testimony delivered from Spain, Yáñez detailed the alleged psychological threats and physical abuse she endured, accusing Fernández of forcing her to undergo an abortion.

Fernández has denied all the allegations and is currently prohibited from leaving the country while the investigation proceeds.

On Wednesday, prosecutor Ramiro Gonzales officially requested that charges be brought against the ex-president.

The investigation was prompted by leaked photos published by local media, showing Yáñez with a black eye and bruises, sparking outrage across Argentina.

Fernández has dismissed the accusations as unfounded.

In excerpts of an interview released earlier this week, he claimed that Yáñez’s black eye was the result of a “cosmetic treatment.”

Under Argentine law, it will ultimately be up to a judge to decide whether or not to press charges.

Fernández, who began his political career in the early 1980s during the waning days of the military dictatorship, served as Argentina’s president from 2019 to 2023.
