Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu dismisses rejection claims, cites age as reason for declining NPP running mate position
The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Suame MP, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has dismissed rumors that he was rejected as the 2024 running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
In a recent interview on Kumasi-based Nhyira FM’s Kroyimu Nsem show, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu clarified that his decision was influenced by his age, which he felt would be a hindrance to the physically demanding nature of a national campaign.
“I wouldn’t say it was a rejection, but considering my age, it wouldn’t be ideal for me to take on the role of running mate, especially given the energy required to continue as a party leader after eight years,” the Suame MP explained.
He expressed support for the selection of Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate, praising the younger candidate’s energy and qualifications as vital assets for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in its bid to secure a third consecutive term in office.
“My age doesn’t make me the best candidate for the running mate position, but NAPO [Opoku Prempeh] is young and well-suited for the job. This role demands significant energy and competence, and NAPO is perfectly equipped to assist the flagbearer,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu added.
The veteran legislator also urged Ghanaians to recognize the distinct vision of the NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, noting that while Bawumia has worked closely with President Akufo-Addo, he would bring his own approach and vision to the presidency.
“Every President has a unique vision upon entering office. Although Bawumia has worked with Nana Addo, he will have his own way of doing things. This is why he has promised to continue some of the President’s work while making changes to align with his own vision,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said.
