The Nigeria Immigration Service has called in a woman for questioning after she was caught on video tearing up her husband’s passport at Lagos airport, a clip that has since gone viral on social media.
The woman, identified as Favour Igiebor, was seen in the video yelling at her husband while pieces of the Nigerian passport lay scattered on the floor.
The incident occurred at the Murtala Mohammed airport after she, her husband, and their children had returned from Europe.
In the video, Igiebor was heard admitting, “I tore it,” as other travelers witnessed the scene.
Authorities have stated that they are investigating the matter, emphasizing that destroying a Nigerian passport is a criminal offense, punishable by up to a year in prison.
Following the video’s circulation and the numerous reactions it sparked, Mrs. Igiebor released her own video.
She did not go into specifics but expressed that she was suffering, saying, “Look at my eyes – I do cry a lot. Many people commenting on social media don’t understand what I am going through.”
She urged people to consider her reasons, stating, “I have my reasons. I have gone through a lot of family issues. I cannot be suffering. I suffered with him.”
She mentioned that she had considered tearing the passport while still in Europe but decided against it to avoid causing her husband additional problems.
During the incident at the airport, one traveler noted that the couple had been arguing throughout the flight, and some onlookers were seen comforting the husband, advising him to remain calm.
If charged, Mrs. Igiebor would be the first person to face legal action for destroying a Nigerian passport.
Recently, Nigeria has been cracking down on the misuse of its national symbols, including stricter measures against the casual handling of the national currency, the naira, at social events.
