Bawumia pledges $10M annual funding for GSA
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has committed to providing the Geological Survey Authority with at least $10 million annually as part of efforts to enhance the exploration and benefits of Ghana’s mineral resources.
Dr. Bawumia criticized the current system, where companies are granted prospecting licenses to search for minerals using what he described as a “trial and error” approach, which he believes leads to environmental degradation.
To address this, he proposed that the Geological Survey Authority be adequately resourced to accurately locate mineral deposits, thereby reducing environmental harm and improving exploration efficiency.
He emphasized that the Geological Survey Authority has already identified specific mineral locations, which would allow exploration companies to focus their efforts more precisely.
Additionally, he outlined plans to initiate a community mining scheme, supported by a common user facility, to further facilitate responsible mining practices.
To ensure the success of this initiative, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the importance of involving local chiefs in the mineral licensing process.
He suggested that chiefs should be given an equity stake in small-scale mining operations, thereby ensuring their involvement and promoting more sustainable mining practices in their communities.
