Wassa East MP Sparks Controversy with Support for Galamasey Activities
In a surprising turn of events, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wassa East, Hon. Isaac Adjei Mensah, has publicly expressed support for the Galamasey activities in Wassa Essaman, contradicting the District Chief Executive’s (DCE) recent efforts to address concerns from the community.
Last week, the DCE visited the Essaman community to address concerns about the galamsey activities and the recent killing of an Indigenous resident.
The DCE urged non-resident galamsey operators to vacate the area, citing environmental degradation and safety concerns.
In an interview, Hon. Adjei Mensah claimed that the DCE’s initiative was politically motivated, being an election year.
He called for the return of the Galamsey operators, sparking controversy.
“I’m pleading with all foreigners to be patient. I urge all of them to return to develop the constituency, notwithstanding that we are in an election year, it is worrying when a DCE chases people away from this area.”
Hon. Emmanuel Boakye, DCE, responded, “Wassa East citizens should be aware of Adjei Mensah’s true intentions.” He questioned the MP’s silence on a similar incident three years ago, alleging that Adjei Mensah prioritizes votes over constituents’ welfare.
Residents of Wassa Essaman express concerns about environmental degradation and safety risks associated with Galamasey activities.
This controversy highlights the complex political dynamics in Wassa East, with the MP and DCE holding differing views on Galamasey’s activities. The situation remains fluid, with potential implications for the upcoming elections.
